Want to count the keywords on a website, a blog draft or a document? Paste the text into the box above and this free keyword counter lists every keyword and phrase with its count and keyword density, for single words and for 2 and 3 word phrases. It is the quickest way to see which words a page is really about, and whether your main topic shows up often enough to be clear without tipping into stuffing.
One honest note about how it works: this counter reads pasted text, it does not fetch pages from a URL. Open the page, select all of its text with Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac), copy it and paste it here. That keeps your text completely private, and it means the same method works on unpublished drafts, documents and pages that sit behind a login. Pair it with our word counter when you also need reading time and a readability score.
Key features
- Live results: total words, the number of keywords found and your top keyword, all updated the moment you paste.
- Three phrase lengths: switch between 1, 2 and 3 word phrases to see both single keywords and the longer phrases readers actually search for.
- Keyword density: every keyword and phrase shows its density as a percentage of your total words, worked out properly for multi word phrases.
- Stop words filtered: joining words like “the” and “and” are kept out of the list, so the keywords that describe your topic stand out.
- Filter and copy: search the results list, click any keyword to copy it, or copy the whole table with counts and density in one click.
- Private by design: counting runs in your browser. No sign-up, no uploads, and your text never leaves your device.
How to use
- Open the web page or document you want to check and copy its text (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C, or Cmd+A then Cmd+C on a Mac).
- Paste the text into the box above. Your total word count and keyword list appear straight away.
- Use the 1 word, 2 words and 3 words buttons to switch phrase length, and read the density column to spot overused or missing phrases.
- Filter the list to find a specific phrase, click a row to copy a keyword, or use Copy results to take the whole table into a spreadsheet or document.
How to count keywords on a website
The copy and paste method takes under a minute. Open the page, click anywhere on it, and select all with Ctrl+A. Copy with Ctrl+C, paste into the counter above, and read the list from the top: the highest counts are the words the page talks about most. To compare your page with a competitor page, run both through the counter and compare the top 10 phrases side by side. Where a rival repeats a useful phrase that your page barely mentions, that is usually a section worth adding or expanding. And if one of your own phrases repeats so often that the text reads badly, run it through the paraphrasing tool to vary the wording while keeping the meaning.
What is a healthy keyword density?
Keyword density is simply the share of your total words that a keyword or phrase makes up. A two word phrase used 10 times in a 1,000 word article accounts for 20 words, a density of 2%. There is no magic figure, and search engines reward clear, complete writing far more than any percentage. As a rough sanity check, a main topic phrase somewhere around 1 to 2% is common in natural writing. Well under that and the page may look vague about its topic; far above it and the text usually starts to read as stuffed, which puts readers off long before it impresses an algorithm.
Private by design
Like every Savozi tool, this counter runs entirely in your browser, so it is safe for client drafts, unpublished articles and private documents. It is part of our free writing tools collection: no account, no limits and nothing to install.
