File to Markdown Converter

Convert PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML, CSV and EPUB files to clean Markdown, free, in your browser.

This free pdf to markdown converter turns your documents into clean Markdown that AI tools read well. Drop in a PDF, Word file, spreadsheet, presentation, web page, CSV or ebook, and get back tidy Markdown with headings, lists and tables preserved. There is nothing to install, no account to create and nothing to upload: the whole conversion runs in your browser, on your own device.

Markdown is the format ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and most knowledge base tools handle best. A pasted PDF dump loses structure and wastes tokens, while a converted document keeps its headings, its lists and its tables in plain text. That is why writers, students and developers convert files before feeding them to an AI assistant, and why this tool exists: one drop, one clean .md file, ready to paste anywhere.

Key features

  • PDF to Markdown: reads the text layer of a PDF and returns its headings, paragraphs and lists in reading order.
  • Word, Excel and PowerPoint: DOCX files keep headings, bold, italics, links, lists and tables; XLSX files become one Markdown table per sheet; PPTX decks become one section per slide.
  • HTML, CSV, EPUB and plain text: web pages convert to readable Markdown, spreadsheets in CSV form become tables, ebooks convert chapter by chapter, and plain text gains structure from its headings and lists.
  • Copy or download: edit the output on the page, copy it in one click, or download it as a .md file with a matching name.
  • Private by design: everything runs locally in your browser, so your documents are never uploaded to a server.
  • Free, with no sign-up: no account, no credits, no daily limit and no file size cap set by the tool.

How to use

  1. Drop your file onto the tool, or choose it from your device. You can convert several files at once.
  2. Wait a moment while the tool reads the file and builds the Markdown.
  3. Check the output, edit it if you like, then copy it or download it as a .md file.
  4. If you have text rather than a file, paste it into the paste box instead: HTML pastes convert with their formatting kept, plain text gains headings and lists from its structure.

What converts well, and what does not

Documents with real text convert best: reports, essays, meeting notes, manuals, spreadsheets and slide decks. Tables in Word and Excel files come out as proper Markdown tables, and links in Word files keep their targets. PowerPoint text becomes readable notes rather than a slide design, which is exactly what you want when feeding a deck to an AI assistant.

Three honest limits are worth knowing. First, scanned PDFs cannot convert yet, because a scanned page is only an image with no text layer to read; if your PDF has selectable text, it will convert, and scanned support through OCR is planned as a separate tool. Second, heavy design does not survive: colours, fonts, images and page layout are dropped, because Markdown is a plain text format. Third, unusual embedded fonts in a PDF can garble a few characters, since the tool reads the standard text encoding. For everyday documents made in Word, Google Docs or a browser print dialog, conversion is clean.

Why Markdown beats pasting a document into an AI chat

Pasting a document straight into a chat usually means pasting either a wall of unformatted text or a chunk of HTML full of styling code. Both waste tokens and confuse the model about what is a heading and what is a footnote. Markdown solves both problems at once: it is plain text, so nothing is wasted on styling, and its headings, lists and tables tell the model how the document is organised. That gives you cleaner summaries, better question answering over your own files, and tidier entries when you build a knowledge base or a prompt library.

It also works beyond AI chats. Markdown opens in Obsidian, Notion, VS Code, GitHub and every notes app worth using, and it stays readable in fifty years because it is just text. Converting a file once gives you a version you can reuse everywhere, instead of a format locked to one app.

Private by design

Like every Savozi tool, this one runs entirely in your browser. Your files are read and processed on your own device and are never uploaded to our server, so there is no server copy, no upload wait and no file size cap imposed by us. Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to Markdown?

Drop your PDF onto the tool, or choose it from your device. The converter reads the PDF text layer and returns clean Markdown with headings, paragraphs and lists kept in order. Copy the result or download it as a .md file, ready to paste into ChatGPT, Claude or your notes app.

Which file types can I convert to Markdown?

PDF, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx), HTML, CSV, EPUB, plain text and existing Markdown files. Excel sheets become Markdown tables, one per sheet, and PowerPoint decks become one section per slide with the slide title as a heading.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Every conversion runs 100% in your browser, on your own device. Your documents are never uploaded, stored or seen by anyone else, which makes this safe for private drafts, contracts and reports.

Can I convert a scanned PDF?

Not yet. This converter reads the text layer inside a PDF, so scanned pages that are only images have no text to read. If your PDF has selectable text, it will convert. Scanned document support through OCR is planned as a separate tool.

Is there a file size limit?

No limit is set by the tool itself. Conversion happens on your device, so very large files are limited only by your device memory. Everyday documents, reports and ebooks convert in seconds.

Why convert a file to Markdown for AI tools?

Markdown keeps the structure of a document, headings, lists and tables, in plain text that language models read well, and it uses fewer tokens than raw HTML or a pasted PDF dump. Converting first gives cleaner AI answers and tidier knowledge base entries.

Is the file to Markdown converter really free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up, no credits and no daily limit. Convert as many files as you like, and download every result as a .md file.
