TL;DR: UPI lets you pay anyone from your bank account in seconds, free, using a phone app and a secret UPI PIN. You need a bank account, the mobile number linked to it, and your debit card once, to set the PIN. Learn the limits and the one golden rule: you never enter your PIN to receive money.
Last checked: 13 October 2026. Limits and rules below were verified against NPCI, the Reserve Bank of India and Press Information Bureau sources on this date.
UPI, the Unified Payments Interface built by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is now the default way India pays. Beginners usually stall on the same points: which limit applies, whether it costs anything, and which safety advice is real. This guide answers those points with the current official figures, including the UPI Lite limits that changed in October 2024.
What is UPI and how does it work?
UPI is an instant payment system from NPCI that moves money directly between bank accounts, at any hour, using a mobile app. You pay with a UPI ID, a mobile number or a QR scan instead of an account number and IFSC. The money stays in your bank account until the second you confirm a payment with your PIN.
Because every app runs on the same NPCI system, a Google Pay user can pay a PhonePe or BHIM user instantly. BHIM is NPCI’s own app, described on the official BHIM site, while other apps are built by banks and payment companies on the same rails. The full product description is on NPCI’s UPI page. Unlike a wallet, there is no separate balance to load for normal UPI payments.
What do you need before you start?
You need four things: an account at a bank that supports UPI, the mobile number linked to that account with its SIM in your phone, your debit card from that account for the one time PIN setup, and a smartphone with internet. If the mobile number is not linked, update it at your bank first, because setup verifies it by SMS.
Download your app only from the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store, never from a link sent by a stranger. You can link more than one bank account in one app and use more than one app with the same account. Once UPI is running, protect the phone itself too, using the habits in our online privacy guide for beginners and a strong screen lock.
How do you set up UPI and create your UPI PIN?
Install the app, verify your mobile number, choose your bank, and the app finds the account linked to that number. Then set your UPI PIN by entering the last 6 digits of your debit card and its expiry date, plus the one time password your bank sends by SMS. After that, the card goes back in your wallet.
Your UPI PIN is a 4 or 6 digit secret, set by your bank’s rules, and it authorises every payment. Enter it only inside your own app, on the payment screen. No bank, NPCI or customer care officer will ever ask for it, and anyone who does is a scammer. Forgotten it? Use the reset option in the app and repeat the debit card and one time password steps. Guard it like a card PIN, and use a different, strong password for the app account itself with our free password generator.
How much can you send with UPI and UPI Lite?
For normal UPI, NPCI’s limit is up to Rs 1 lakh per transaction, and most banks also cap person to person payments at Rs 1 lakh per day across all your apps combined. Higher limits apply to specific verified categories, such as Rs 5 lakh for hospitals and education. Your bank can set a lower limit, so check in the app.
| Feature | UPI | UPI Lite | Debit card or netbanking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the money sits | Your bank account | Small wallet inside the app, loaded from your account | Your bank account |
| PIN for each payment? | Yes, UPI PIN | No PIN for payments within the limit | Card PIN, or password plus one time password |
| Per transaction limit | Up to Rs 1 lakh for normal payments | Rs 1,000 | Set by your bank and card |
| Wallet or daily limit | Usually Rs 1 lakh a day, bank dependent | Wallet holds up to Rs 5,000 | Daily card and account limits apply |
| Best for | Most payments, bills and transfers | Tea, auto fares and other small daily payments | Large transfers above UPI limits |
| Cost to you | Free for personal payments | Free | Some transfers and cards carry fees |
UPI Lite figures were raised by the Reserve Bank of India on 9 October 2024, from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 per transaction and from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 for the wallet, so ignore older guides that still quote the old numbers. The Reserve Bank of India publishes these decisions. New UPI users are also commonly restricted, often to Rs 5,000 in the first 24 hours, as a fraud safeguard. For amounts above the UPI limits, use NEFT or RTGS in your banking app instead.
Is UPI really free?
Yes, for you as a user. Sending money to family, friends and shops from your bank account costs you nothing, and receiving money costs nothing. There is no per payment charge on your bank statement for normal UPI use, which is why it has replaced cash for small payments across India.
The costs sit inside the industry instead. For merchant payments made from prepaid wallets over Rs 2,000, NPCI’s framework sets an interchange of up to 1.1 percent, paid between the companies involved, not by the customer. If any app or person tries to charge you a fee to send or receive a normal UPI payment, treat it as a warning sign and stop.
What safety rules protect you from UPI fraud?
Three rules stop almost every common scam. Never share your UPI PIN or one time password with anyone. Always check the receiver’s name shown on the confirmation screen before you enter your PIN. And never scan a QR code or enter your PIN to receive money, because receiving needs neither, a point NPCI repeats in its own awareness guidance.
- Collect requests: a request asking you to approve and enter your PIN is a payment out, however it is dressed up. Decline requests from strangers.
- Fake customer care: use the help section inside your app. Never install a screen sharing app at a caller’s request, and never search for a helpline number and trust the first result.
- Autopay mandates: review active mandates in your app, set sensible maximum amounts, and cancel services you no longer use. A quick way to pay a genuine shop QR is to practise with our free QR code generator and see what a payment code contains.
What should you do if money leaves your account in a fraud?
Act at once, in this order. Report the payment inside your UPI app, call the national cyber helpline on 1930, report at cybercrime.gov.in, and inform your bank. Speed matters because the reporting system tries to freeze money still moving between accounts, as the Press Information Bureau explains in its update on the fraud reporting system.
Save the transaction ID, the time, the amount and screenshots before you do anything else, and change your UPI PIN from a device you trust if you shared it or installed anything a caller asked for. Then warn the family member the scammer may target next, because the same script is usually tried on relatives the same week. More protective tools are listed on our free tools hub.
What it means for your money
UPI is free and instant, which makes it brilliant for paying and dangerous for budgeting, because spending no longer feels like spending. Worked example: paying a Rs 450 grocery bill by UPI costs exactly Rs 450, with no fee, and the shop receives it in seconds. Pay the same bill weekly and UPI has quietly moved Rs 1,800 a month out of your account in four taps.
The fix is visibility, not avoiding UPI. Review your app history every Sunday, total the small payments, and compare the figure with your plan in a simple monthly budget system. Pair that check with one of the best free budgeting apps that can categorise UPI spending, set a weekly UPI Lite load as your small cash allowance, and large or unusual payments will stand out at once, which also makes fraud easier to spot.
Frequently asked questions
Can you receive money without a UPI PIN or QR scan?
Yes, and this is the point scammers rely on you not knowing. Money sent to your UPI ID or mobile number arrives on its own. You never scan a code, approve a request or enter a PIN to receive it. Anyone who says otherwise is trying to make you pay them instead.
What happens if you send money to the wrong UPI ID?
UPI payments settle instantly and cannot be pulled back by the app. Check the name on the confirmation screen before every payment, since that is your one real safeguard. If a mistake happens, contact the receiver, then raise a dispute in the app and with your bank at once, and keep the transaction ID.
Can you use UPI without a debit card?
For the first PIN setup, most banks still ask for debit card details. Some banks now offer Aadhaar based setup for selected accounts, but availability varies by bank and app. If you have no debit card, ask your bank what it supports rather than trusting a video or a third party site with your details.
Why did your payment fail even though it was under Rs 1 lakh?
Common reasons are your bank’s lower daily cap, the first day restriction for new users, the daily count of payments, or a receiver category limit. Wait, check the limit your bank shows in the app, and split or reschedule the payment. For a genuinely large transfer, NEFT or RTGS in your banking app is the better tool.
Is UPI Lite safer than normal UPI?
It limits your exposure, because the wallet can hold at most Rs 5,000 and each payment is capped at Rs 1,000, and no PIN is typed in public for small payments. Normal UPI has the stronger check of a PIN on every payment. Many people use Lite for small daily spending and normal UPI for everything else.
